Feb. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said the U.S. is ``clearly on the edge'' of a recession and reiterated his view that the odds are ``50 percent or better.''
``I think we are clearly on the edge,'' Greenspan told a group of energy-industry executives today at the Cambridge Energy Research Associates' 27th annual CERAWeek conference in Houston. Still, he said, ``American business was in such extra- good shape before this problem hit. Otherwise we would be talking about how long and how deep. We are not there yet.''

We're supposed to actually be in a recession by the end of this year correct? If so, how bad is the job market going to be? It's something I'm trying to keep an eye on. But being a dummy with these kinds of things makes it kinda hard. I'm still looking at Border Patrol, but the $15K a year hit is going to be tough to deal with. Right now I'm a little over $50K a year after all is said and done. That's before my benefits. As much as I want to be able to go home every night, having a steady and decent paycheck means a little more to me.

Doug, if you would rather I start a new thread let me know and I'll edit it.

Bob there are areas of the economy that are not going to be as affected, I think Border Patrol/Govt jobs being one of them. What I feel we'll see is a contraction in the job market for service related job, manufacturing, and some white-collar professions.

Hi Bob,

typically, its hard to determine if the economy is in a recession until after the fact, howeve I don't see us having real economic growth for some time, as many industries are in decline, many related directly or indirectly to the housing market (RE agents, brokers, loan officers, construction, home depot, lowes, etc.).

It is impossible to determine the severity of the economic impacts on jobs. No job is going to be more secure than your current one, however with security you are giving up some freedom of choice. 50k is tough to live on in SD, let alone 35k. My opinion is a federal job (BP) is much stronger than a state or city (SD) job at this point.

I'm definitly going to try and stay federal. Tracy works as well. She figures it'll be like going back to when she wasn't working. We won't be struggling, but we won't be able to buy all the fun things we can right now.

Bob, I've been working at an ICE Detention center . I've had a chance to talk with a lot of the guys that work for Border Patrol and they say that there is so much overtime, that you probably wouldn't see the 15k a year hit. Of course you would have to put in OT.

I think he wouldn't mind OT, as he still goes home at the end of the day.

In preparation for this recession, I am going to blow $6,000 on some rims, axles, tires, brakes, and other needless shit for my 5.0.
