Ford chose to offer the Mustang GT and Cobras as option for performance oriented people, who aren't broke dicks. There are 3.8's and 4.0's putting out a lot of power. If those people would've invested that money in a V8, they could be making so much more power.

As SDSnake said, the 4.0 can make more power. Fords new 3.5 is making 265hp...
